Development

All babies and infants develop at their own pace. Most development such as smiling , sitting, walking etc follow what is called a normal distribution

You can see from the graph that with smiling for example most babies will smile at about 6 weeks but some will be at the far left of the graph and smile early 3 weeks and others at the far right and smile late – 9 weeks plus. All these babies are normal but some books and health workers concentrate too much on the average and parents can then worry unnecessarily when babies don’t so things “on time”. Paediatricians are all trained to screen development and to know what looks normal and what doesn’t and can confidently see the larger picture but also identify any potential problems.
