Sleep problems and snoring

Snoring and long pauses in breathing at night can reach alarming levels in some children. Whilst snoring with a blocked nose during colds is fairly shortlived – children who do this all year should be seen. Parents have often described to me how their snoring children seem to hold their breath until a loud snort restarts the snore and how parents sometimes feel they fear that the pause will end . Whilst the child may be unaware of the anxiety this causes their parent they can suffer from significant sleep disruption which in its severest form may lead to developmental delay. A thorough general paediatric assessment will determine whether further investigations are required

There are many other problems affecting sleep. Night terrors, tooth grinding, poor sleep behaviour and constant waking are but a few that might be worth discussing
